Managing Problems Associated with Ballast Water Discharges in Malaysia

Harmful aquatic organisms can be introduced into the coastal and marine environment through the ballast water used to keep ships safe and stable. Australia, New Zealand and the US have promoted voluntary codes of conduct to reduce risks of this kind to the environment. This paper reviews the present status of ballast water discharge management in Malaysia. It also discusses theoretical concepts about the collection
of baseline data to manage ballast water discharge.
