Abstract

The South China Sea is an important regional and global water body. From an environmental standpoint, the South China Sea is located within the Indo-West Pacific marine biogeographic region - the centre of tropical marine biological diversity. The South China Sea also plays an important role in the food security of the littoral states. Total fisheries production from the South China Sea amounted to 5 million tonnes in 1993, this from a potential of about 5.8 million tonnes.
