Sustainable Development and The Marine Fisheries Sector

Abstract

Without doubt sustainable development has become the buzzword for the 1990 s and possibly into the next millenium. This is partly due to the growing concern about a rapidly deteriorating global environmental quality as well as the diminishing renewal capacity of the planet s natural
resources. Indeed, the term sustainable development can be viewed as a tacit recognition of the negative aspects or limitations of the concept of development. It is a reminder that the country s rapid economic growth is not without its attendant social and environmental costs. It also encapsulates the concern that the economic well-being and social welfare of the country is ultimately related to the sustainable use and conservation of living resources.
