Abstract

The greening of the maritime sector is not new. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has as early as the sixties set standards for marine pollution control and continues to develop regulations that make for safer ships leading to cleaner seas in the advent of technological
advancement and changing shipping practices. Over the years, an extensive framework has emerged, with tighter enforcement mechanisms and a comprehensive liability and compensation
regime.
