Permal, Sumathy (2009) Addressing The Issue Of Trafficking Of Human Through Malaysia’s Sea. MIMA Bulletin, 16 (3). pp. 7-12. ISSN 1394-5947
Abstract
In early July 2009, the United States put Malaysia on its list of countries suspected of not doing enough to combat human trafficking, together with six other African countries. One of the problems with regards to the issue of human trafficking is the route used by the traffickers to enter the country. A large number of immigrants come to Malaysia by sea since it is cheaper than other modes of transportation. As such, there is a need to implement necessary security measures to prevent the traffickers and illegal immigrants from entering the country especially through the sea. This paper addresses the status of illegal
immigrants in Malaysia. It also reviews the use of sea routes by traffickers and illegals to enter the country
through ungazzeted entry points also known as "Pintu Tikus". The paper also elaborates on the existing policy in place with regards to the issue of trafficking. Finally, the paper suggests the way forward to tackle the issues.
