Abstract

The maritime space of Southeast Asia, at the crossroads between Europe and the Middle East and East Asia and North America, is essential to international trade. The waters of the Southeast Asia are rich in seafood and hydrocarbons: its seas are some of the most traversed shipping lanes in the world. Significantly, the UNCLOS of 1982 expanded the definition of territorial waters from 3 nautical miles off the coast to 12, established the 200-nautical mile Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), and formulated the rule of jurisdiction over archipelagic waters.
