Abstract
This study traces the emergence of China as a maritime and economic powerhouse and analyzes the impact that this has had on Malaysia’s maritime sector. Particular attention
is given to the growing trade between the two countries and the attendant expansion of Malaysian ports and the growth in its shipping and logistics sector to accommodate the rising trade volume between the two countries. The study contends that Malaysian companies should seize the opportunity of growing trade between the country and China and the demand for maritime services to facilitate the trade by, among others, enhancing their competitiveness, capacity and capabilities to handle greater volume of trade, by forming joint ventures with Chinese companies in the maritime sector, and by participating in Chinese maritime infrastructure development. It will also point out areas of opportunities in which the Malaysian maritime sector can capitalize with respect to its growing trade with China and its stunning economic, trade and maritime growth.
