Abstract
This article discusses maritime security in the context of post-9/11 security framework and provides an overview of recent measures put in place to boost port security. It
assesses the initiatives taken by the international maritime community to address the security risks and discusses some of the problems and pertinent issues related to complying with port security measures. The implications of complying with the security measures from a cost-benefit analysis and risk management perspective are also discussed. The paper concludes by advocating a measured response to security threats in a manner that does not compromise the need for ports to operate smoothly and efficiently, and by making a case for the costs of providing maritime security to be
equally shouldered by all the players along the maritime supply chain.
