Basiron, Mohd Nizam (2007) Symposium on the Enhancement of Safety of Navigation and the Environmental Protection of the Straits of Malacca and Singapore. MIMA Bulletin, 14 (1). ISSN 1394-5947
Abstract
The Maritime Institute of Malaysia (MIMA) in collaboration with the Centre for Southeast Asian Studies of Indonesia (CSAS), the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS) , Nanyang University of Technology, Singapore and
the Japan International Transport Institute (JITI) organised the Symposium on the Enhancement of Safety of Navigation and the Environmental Protection of the Straits of Malacca and Singapore from 13 - 14 March 2007. The objectives of the symposium among others were to deliberate on how the burden
of keeping the Straits safe for navigation could be shared between the littoral States and the users. While this was not a new issue, recent developments such as the commitments made by the users at the Kuala Lumpur Meeting on the Straits of Malacca and Singapore suggested that the users were now more amenable to sharing the cost of navigational safety
and environmental protection of the Straits.
