Abstract

Pirates attacks in the Malacca Strait are an increasing security threat. On 28 February 2005, four gunmen forced their way on board a tug boat towing coal in Malaysian waters. The pirates kidnapped the Malaysian captain and Indonesian chief officer of the tug and released them nine days later. The two landed safely in Port Klang in a fishing boat on March 8. It is believed that a ransom was paid, but no details are available.
