This paper argues that the prospects for resolving territorial problems in the Spratlies are slim. This is because nations are unlikely to trade off territories easily. Apart from the fact that the South China Sea has become militarised and that there are a multiplicity of claims over the same territories, Beijing’s ambitions in the South China Sea have affected the
