Scope And Impact Of IMO Conventions

The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) is an agency of the United Nations which was established in 1948. It came into being to address shipping issues which is an international industry which was felt needed coordinated international efforts in order to improve its operations. The main thrust of its work is on safety and the prevention of pollution with “safer shipping and cleaner oceans” as its motto and objectives. IMO is a technical organization consisting of an Assembly, Council, various committees and sub committees supported by a secretariat and headed by a Secretary General as illustrated below. All these bodies are composed of representatives of member states discharging their functions with the assistance and advice of appropriate bodies from the United Nations, international
governmental and non-governmental organisations representing a wide spectrum of maritime, legal and environmental interests?-
