The United Nations Convention on The Law of The Sea and Chapter 17 of Agenda 21: Malaysia’s Obligations Towards The Conservation of The Marine Environment

The management of global seas depends partly on the successful implementation of the many international instruments (conventions, treaties, programmes and protocols), which governs sea use and activities. To date there are at least 47 such instruments, which come under the purview of the United Nations, and its subsidiary bodies such as the International Maritime Organisation (IMO).1 Of these instruments, two have gained prominence in the area of ocean governance, particularly in the protection and conservation of the marine environment.
